Altcoin

What is an Altcoin?

An altcoin refers to any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin. Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency created in 2009. It remained the only one for a moment and then new cryptocurrencies started emerging in the market. An altcoin –  derived from “alternative coin” – therefore describes all cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin.

What are examples of altcoins?

A few examples of altcoins are Ethereum (ETH), Cardano (ADA), and Polygon (MATIC). Today, there are thousands and thousands of altcoins in circulation with very different purposes, technologies and values.
